Description

The main motive of this project is to make the NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) courses available for students in a suitable format. There are many ways to enable MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) available to the students - similar to Coursera courses on iPad. However, is there an alternative to enable this content in a more student friendly manner - cheaper devices and more affordable infrastructure to support faster distribution of content?

Current Status

Identified various formats in which content can be delivered and their pros and cons.

  3. Audio+Ebook

Audio+Ebook based on e-ink technology like Kindle seems to be a viable option to distribute fairly sophisticated and specialized material to students.

Next Steps

  • Build a cheap and efficient e-ink display device for reading pdfs and listening to audio lectures. Reused displays from Kindles can be bought for ~$25-$30 from sites like eBay. A resistive touchscreen costs ~$10-$20. Build a proof of concept on a board such as Raspberry Pi before building a more self-contained device.

  • Investigate alternatives to touchscreen since alternative keyboards in various Indian languages can be difficult to mass produce.

Requirements

  • Software developers - Experience in Raspberry Pi and/or Android development
  • Hardware and firmware engineers familiar with tablets and embedded systems
